Pier Glasses & Triptychs

Our Pier Glasses and Triptych mirrors are characterised and linked by their classical friezes above the glass.

Overmantels has carefully amassed one of the largest collections of original and authentic frieze moulds from the 18th & 19th Centuries, including the very classic Swag & Bows, the frivolously fun Nymphs or Chariot friezes, the pretty anthemion chains, the delicate rose lattice and other Classical mythological themes.  The background colour can be painted to match your own decorative schemes for a very bespoke finish.

Pier Glasses are so-called because they were designed to fit on the 'Pier wall' that divided the often nearly full-length windows that had become a feature of l8th century architecture. They were often placed over Pier or Console tables. Our styles are of late 18th century design with classical friezes. The Wide Pier Glass mirrors fit very well over fireplaces.  Standard (slim) Pier glasses are very effective in bringing light to narrow areas such as halls, passageways and landings.

Triptych mirrors appeared in the latter half of the 18th century and were the first mirrors available in ordinary homes.  Mirror glass was then a very expensive item and was only really available in small sheets, thus the three panel format was an ideal solution in achieving a wide oblong mirror to go over the fireplace. Many of the designs emanated from the renowned Classical architect Robert Adam. Our Triptychs come with bevelled glass edges as originally the glass was poured into a mould that had a mitred lip around the edge giving the glass a bevelled appearance. These Triptych mirrors were often called Vauxhall mirrors after the glassworks that first produced them in the 18th century.

All the friezes shown in this section can be mixed and matched with any frame style.

This mirror of early 18 Century English design evokes notions of grand traditional houses.

It is a quinessentially traditional mirror that suits wide fireplaces with lower slung ceilings.  A fusion of the Arch made popular in Victorian era with the 18C Triptych panel design.

It is rich in composition detailing - although for a more paired down look these could be amended or removed.

While a Gold leaf finish may be in keeping with its history; however, a shabby chic twist would contemporise the frame for a more rural sense.

This panel style mirror would traditionally come with bevel edges to the glass to add further distinction but again this option can be altered for plain glass or even antiqued glass for a softer look.

The price with bevel glass in each of the panels is £2,020
